Pave It, Preserve It

Insight For A Professional Asphalt Repair And Overlay

by Mildred Fisher

The aging process of your asphalt pavement is a naturally occurring process with weather and traffic wear and tear. Overtime, your asphalt is gong to be susceptible to oxidation, cracking, and structural damage, which you can arrange for repair and maintenance with some different types of professional asphalt services. Here is some insight about reconstructing and repairing your asphalt pavement to improve its look and function.

Consider Your Options

When your asphalt begins to age and show signs of damage, the sooner you complete repair and maintenance tasks, the better off your pavement will withstand the test of time. Your asphalt pavement is meant to last for years, as long as you take care of it with the right follow-up treatments. A surface overlay of your pavement will restore your asphalt without having to remove and replace the entire pavement structure. Because only the surface of the pavement is replaced, you can keep existing drainage in place and have your pavement restored in a more timely manner. So, instead of removing the top and foundation layer of the pavement, your driveway or parking area will be available for use more quickly when it is completed within a few days instead of weeks.

Keep in mind your asphalt's condition when you hire a repair service. If the foundation has sustained erosion, sinking, or other types of failure, it may be necessary to remove the full asphalt's layers and install a solid foundation on which to apply the new asphalt layer. Your asphalt professional can provide recommendations for your pavement and also help you keep your new paved surface protected so it does not sustain future foundation damage.

Prepare For Overlay Treatment

When you can repair your asphalt with a new overlay, the old surface will need to be milled and ground from the surface to level any uneven areas and prepare the profile for a new layer. However, this milling can be recycled and reused in new asphalt application through a recycling process.

Once the old surface is ground away, your pavement's under layers will get cleaned to remove excess debris, and then your asphalt crew will apply a tack coat layer to help the new asphalt adhere to the existing foundation layer. Then, a new asphalt layer is poured and compressed onto the base layer and leveled so it provides you the smooth pavement you want but with the right drainage characteristics and slope for maximized moisture drainage.
